Geek Squad is Latin For Save Your Money

I read a story the other day on the Consumerist about the Best Buy Geek Squad charging over $400 dollars for what is essentially swapping an old hard drive for a new on. You may not know what the average price should be, but I can tell you this: THAT'S TOO MUCH! The Geek Squad is extremely overpriced with hidden fees galore. If you actually get the Squad to come to your house it's a miniumum of 100 bucks just to drive up in that fancy bug of theirs. Do yourself a favor and find a small, non-franchise, computer repair shop or a talented college student who needs some extra cash. Either way you'll get higher quality service at an a affordable price.

It's All Your Default

Default
Default
So I haven't posted in a while, but TUAW posted about this great preference script. It's called RCDefaultApp and it does just what it sounds like. It lets you choose your default everything. Mail app, Web Browser, RSS Reader even what app is opened when you connect your digital camera. It works great and it's free. You might be asking "Why do I need this, isn't this ability already built into Mac OSX?" Sorry, the answer is no. You have to use Safari to pick default browser and Apple Mail to pick default mail, and so on. Now you can have it in one place. I recently had this problem with my computer at work which had Apple Mail removed and I couldn't set a new default, but now I can. Excelsior!

Ben Folds - Learn To Live With What You Are (music video)
Mr. Folds has just released a new music video for the song "Learn to live with what you are" and it's funny stuff. I've noticed with the last couple of albums that Folds doesn't like to make big, expensive videos. He seems to go for the "home movie" look and feel and I have to say I like the results. Windows, Mac, Linux - What's your preference and why?

Big Mac
Big Mac
I'm a Mac user through and through. It started because I'm a graphic designer and apple is the way to go with design. I've done design work on both PCs and Macs and there was a big difference when it came to my workflow and how quickly I could get things done. Macs just work and make logical sense. Things could always change though. Maybe PC makers will catch on and make a computer that works. I hope one day that American auto-makers will do the same. On the other side of things I've been giving Linux Ubuntu a try lately and it's not bad. Just like any other system it takes some getting used to. And you can't beat the price.

Bob Barker
Bob Barker
So I was reading CNN.com today and discovered that Bob Barker is going to retire in June after 35 years on The Price is Right. I'm sure I'm not the only one sad to see him go. I'm also worried that the pet population is going to explode without those daily reminders to remove our pets genitalia. Oh Bob, what will we do without you?
